It’s Kingsolver’s 17th novel in some three decades, and in writing it, she says she wanted to counter some of the condescension and downright snobbery directed at the region in which she was born and still lives, an area whose people, she believes, have been exploited for generations, most recently by pharmaceutical companies who targeted Appalachian residents and created the current opioid crisis. Kingsolver conceived the idea while on a visit to Dickens’s historic seaside English retreat and actually started writing Demon Copperhead at Dickens’s own desk. Demon Copperhead re-envisions the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield, setting it in modern-day Appalachia. This attracted the Society's displeasure. In 1651, he published the first part of the Criticón (Faultfinder) without the permission of his superiors, whom he disobeyed repeatedly. During the Spanish war with Catalonia and France, he was chaplain of the army that liberated Lleida in 1646. He was named Rector of the Jesuit college of Tarragona and wrote works proposing models for courtly conduct such as El héroe (The Hero), El político (The Politician), and El discreto (The Discreet One). He acquired fame as a preacher, although some of his oratorical displays, such as reading a letter sent from Hell from the pulpit, were frowned upon by his superiors. He spent time in Huesca, where he befriended the local scholar Vincencio Juan de Lastanosa, who helped him achieve an important milestone in his intellectual upbringing. He assumed the vows of the Jesuits in 1633 and dedicated himself to teaching in various Jesuit schools. He was ordained in 1627 and took his final vows in 1635. He studied at a Jesuit school in 16 and theology in Zaragoza. The son of a doctor, in his childhood Gracián lived with his uncle, who was a priest. Baltasar Gracián y Morales, SJ (8 January 1601 – 6 December 1658), formerly Anglicized as Baltazar Gracian, was a Spanish Jesuit and baroque prose writer and philosopher. "Jeffrey reread it a couple of years ago and felt he could do it much better now," said Trevathan. The revised version – which will be published in mid-October to mark the book's 30th anniversary – doesn't change the plot, just the style. It follows the lives of Boston money man William Lowell Kane and penniless Polish immigrant Abel Rosnovski, born on the same day, through the first world war, the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the bitter rivalry that develops between them. Kane and Abel, first published in 1979, is Archer's bestselling novel – Pan says it has sold around 34m copies worldwide. Now each chapter ends with a question mark, or a much more obvious cliffhanger." In the old book the cliffhangers were a little bit convoluted. "One thing he's done is that with these commercial novels, they end each chapter with a cliffhanger. "The chapters are much punchier, the plot is driven along much faster," said Archer's editor at Pan Macmillan, Jeremy Trevathan.
